The Creative Monster Guide to Fall Start

The air is getting a little crisper, the trees are starting to whisper secrets in shades of red, orange, and gold, and that means one thing: it's Fall Start! And what better way to celebrate the beginning of this super-duper season than with some monster-iffic art that brings the outdoors right into your creative space?

This week, we're going on an adventure to create our very own Fuzzy Fall Leaf Monsters! We'll use the amazing textures of fallen leaves to make colorful rubbings, and then transform them into unique, friendly little monsters. Get ready to explore, rub, and create some truly monster-iffic masterpieces!

Materials Needed

Before we begin our monster-making magic, gather these supplies:

• Freshly Fallen Leaves: Go on a nature walk with a grown-up and collect a variety of leaves. Look for different shapes, sizes, and textures. Flat leaves work best for rubbing!
• Paper: Printer paper, construction paper, or cardstock – any light-colored paper will do!
• Crayons: An assortment of colors, especially fall colors like red, orange, yellow, brown, and green. Make sure to peel the paper wrappers off your crayons!
• Googly Eyes: Small to medium sizes are perfect for giving your monsters personality.
• Glue Stick or Liquid Glue: For attaching those wiggly eyes!
• Markers or Colored Pencils: For drawing monster details like mouths, horns, or fuzzy fur.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Monster Nature Walk! First things first, put on your explorer hat! Head outside with a grown-up, a basket, or a bag, and embark on a mission to find the best fallen leaves. Look for leaves with interesting bumpy veins – these will make the coolest rubbings! Remember, Fig says to only take leaves that have already fallen to the ground.
2. Prepping for Rubbing Magic! Once you've collected your awesome leaf treasures, lay them flat on a hard, smooth surface like a table or a clipboard. Choose one leaf and place a piece of paper directly over it. Make sure the bumpy, textured side of the leaf is facing up, towards your paper.
3. The Rubbing Reveal! Now for the super fun part! Take a crayon (remember, peeled!) and lay it on its side, not its tip. Gently rub the side of the crayon back and forth over the paper where your leaf is underneath. Press just hard enough to see the magic happen! Watch as the amazing shape and all the tiny veins of your leaf magically appear on the paper! Try different colors for different leaves, or even mix colors on one leaf. Roar!
4. Monster-fy Your Leaves! Once your leaf rubbings are complete and looking magnificent, it's time to bring them to life as Creative Monsters! Pick up your googly eyes and use your glue stick or a dab of liquid glue to attach them to your leaf shapes. Give your monsters two eyes, three eyes, or even one giant eye – whatever makes them uniquely them!
5. Add Monster Details! Grab your markers or colored pencils next. This is where your imagination gets to run wild! Draw funny smiles, pointy teeth, crazy hair, tiny monster arms, little squiggly antennae, or even fuzzy monster feet onto your leaf creatures. Every monster is special and different!
6. Show Off Your Fall Friends! Let your monster masterpieces dry completely. Once they're ready, you can hang them up to decorate your room, create a monster-iffic garland, or give them as special fall gifts to friends and family. Hooray for Fuzzy Fall Leaf Monsters!
