The Creative Monster Guide to Fall Start

Hey there, little creative monsters! Guess what time it is? It’s Fall Start (Week 21) and my monster antennae are buzzing with excitement for a super colorful, super fun project! The leaves outside are starting to turn all sorts of glorious shades, and that gives me a fantastic idea! Today, we’re going to collect some of those beautiful fall treasures and turn them into our very own, one-of-a-kind Fall Monster Friends! It’s going to be leaf-tastic!

Materials Needed

• A collection of colorful fall leaves: Go on an adventure outside to find leaves in different shapes, sizes, and colors (red, yellow, orange, brown are perfect!). Make sure they're mostly dry, but not too crumbly.
• Construction paper: A few sheets in various colors (maybe some white, brown, or light blue for backgrounds, and other colors for monster parts).
• Googly eyes: Oh, these are my favorite for monsters! Various sizes are great.
• Glue stick or liquid glue: To stick all our monster bits together securely.
• Markers or crayons: Especially a black marker for drawing faces and details, plus other colors for extra monster flair!
• Child-safe scissors: For cutting out extra monster features if you want to.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Ready to make some autumn magic? Let's get creative!

1. The Great Leaf Hunt! First things first: head outside with an adult and gather your leaves! Look for leaves that have interesting shapes or beautiful colors. Flat leaves work best, but don't be afraid to grab some crinkly ones for texture! Carefully bring your leaf treasures back to your art space.

2. Set Up Your Monster Lab! Lay out your construction paper, googly eyes, glue, and markers. Make sure you have plenty of room to spread out. Choose a piece of construction paper to be the background for your monster masterpiece – maybe a nice sky blue or a warm yellow!

3. Choose Your Monster Body! Look at your collection of leaves. Each one is unique! Pick one leaf that really speaks to you and says, "I want to be a monster!" This will be the main body of your Fall Monster Friend.

4. Give Your Monster Eyes! Now for the most important part of any monster: the eyes! Take your googly eyes and carefully glue them onto your chosen leaf. You can give your monster two eyes, three eyes, one giant eye, or even ten tiny eyes! If you don't have googly eyes, no problem! Use your black marker to draw big, silly eyes right onto the leaf.

5. Draw a Monstrous Face! Time to bring out those markers! Using your black marker, draw a super-duper mouth for your leaf monster. Will it be a happy smile, a surprised "O," a grumpy frown, or a mouth full of pointy teeth? You can also add eyebrows, freckles, or even a little nose. Use other colored markers to add stripes, polka dots, or fuzzy texture to your leaf monster's body.

6. Add Extra Monster Bits! (Optional but Fun!) Want your monster to have arms, legs, wings, or maybe a tiny hat? Grab your construction paper and child-safe scissors (ask an adult for help if you need it!). Cut out small shapes like strips for arms, circles for feet, or triangles for ears. Glue these extra pieces onto your leaf monster. You can even use smaller leaves as extra monster parts!

7. Give Your Monster a Home! Once your Fall Monster Friend is all put together and looking perfectly monstrous, gently glue the back of your entire leaf monster onto your background construction paper. Now, grab your markers and draw a special autumn scene around your monster! Maybe it's sitting on a tree branch, playing in a pile of leaves, or flying through a crisp fall sky.
